FBT & portable electronic devices

From 1 April 2016, small business owners with a turnover of less than $ 2 million per annum will no longer need to pay Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) on any portable electronic devices provided to employees for work-related use.

The devices can include laptops, tablets, calculators, GPS navigation receivers and mobile phones, and the benefit may be in addition to or part of the employee’s salary or wages package.

According to the ATO, you can buy the device at any time but cannot give it to your employees before 1 April 2016 if you want to take advantage of this new concession for small business.

The forthcoming sales might therefore be an ideal time to invest in necessary purchases to ensure that your team has access to the right tools.
